The choices we make today affect our future wellbeing, but these effects can’t always be seen right away. What if we could take a peek into the future. This project experiments with a dystopian future scenario as a means of conveying a message about our behavior today.

Conceptualize and prototype a human-product interaction and create an experience of a dystopian future.
Personal case: what if soil contamination gets so bad that citizens actively need to take part in cleaning? |

In short
In this project I let visitors experience a possible dystopian future 50 years from now. The scenario we sketch in this experience is not meant to be the most plausible. The idea is to create a “Black Mirror effect”. Confronting participants with an unpleasant scenario and making them feel negatively about this possible future is meant to stimulate critical thinking about our present and the possible outcomes of the choices we make today.
This installation is a result of many short design sprints, in which we constantly tested and evaluated. We worked with existing trends and developments to create a believable future scenario that is linked to our current problems.

The "experience dystopia" project
This project was part of an exposition at the TU Delft during which visitors were offered a (fictional) easy job opportunity, no previous job experience or diploma needed, in the soil cleaning factory. Of course, this job doesn’t come without risks, which participants find out later. Our interactive installation enables the visitors to imagine themselves in the context.
My main role in this project was to make the scenario physical. The setup, décor, look and overall feeling of the experience. I also was responsible for the design and hardware of the hand scanner. We worked together on the development of the scenario and the workings of the interactive installation. |
